Model it before pupils practise
Build 306 with three hundreds and six ones in Place Value Blocks. Write 306 = 300 + 0 + 6 and ask which part of the model explains the zero tens. Compare with 360 before starting the sheet.
What to listen for
A digit and its value are different: the 3 in 306 represents 300. Ask pupils to name each part using its place value, rather than listing the digits alone.
Take it further
Keep the total at 306 but exchange one hundred for ten tens. Ask pupils to explain why 200 + 100 + 6 still has the same total.
