Model it before pupils practise
Use Place Value Blocks to represent 247 + 135. Combine the ones first: twelve ones become one ten and two ones. Then combine the tens and hundreds to show why the answer is 382.
What to listen for
Align digits by their place values and explain every exchange. A small carried 1 represents one ten or one hundred; it is not an extra one added to an arbitrary column.
Take it further
Ask pupils to estimate the answer before calculating, then use subtraction to check one completed addition.
