Model it before pupils practise
Set the place value counters to 408. Ask pupils to say four hundred and eight, then explain why there is a zero in the tens column. Compare it with 480 before pupils write either number in words.
What to listen for
Listen for pupils treating 408 as 48 or writing four hundred and eighty. Ask them to identify the value of each digit before choosing the number name.
Take it further
Ask pupils to make two 3-digit numbers using the same digits. Which spoken words change when the digits move?
