Model it before pupils practise
Set Teaching Clock to 2:20. Count four five-minute intervals from twelve, then look at the hour hand between two and three. Move to 2:40 and discuss both forty minutes past two and twenty minutes to three.
What to listen for
The clock numerals name hours but also mark five-minute intervals. Ask pupils which hand they are reading and why the hour hand has moved between the numerals.

Choose two times within an hour and count forwards in five-minute steps to find how many minutes pass between them.
