Model it before pupils practise
Set Teaching Clock to quarter past five, then move to quarter to six. Follow the minute hand from three to nine and discuss why quarter to names the next hour, although the hour hand has not reached six yet.
What to listen for
Quarter to six is 5:45, not 6:45. Ask pupils to say which hour is coming next and use the hour hand to check their answer.

Ask pupils to show quarter past and quarter to for the same named hour, then explain the order of the two times.
