Model it before pupils practise
On Fraction Wall, compare one half, two quarters and four eighths of the same whole. Ask pupils to explain how the number of equal parts changes while the highlighted length stays the same.
What to listen for
Adding the same number to the numerator and denominator does not generally make an equivalent fraction. Compare 2/3 with 4/5 visually, then contrast that with doubling both parts to make 4/6.
Take it further
Ask pupils to make an equivalent-fraction family and explain why every member represents the same proportion of an equal-sized whole.
