Model it before pupils practise
Build three rows of four counters in Times Tables & Arrays. Trace a row as you say 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Rotate the array and compare it with 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12: the total is unchanged.
What to listen for
Ask pupils to identify both the number of groups and the number in each group. Counting every counter can find the total, but naming equal groups explains the repeated addition.
Take it further
Give pupils twelve counters and ask them to make a different array. Record a repeated addition for each arrangement.
